February 5th

It was a rather chilly, misty/foggy Grove Ferry this morning with the air freezing on your face. No sign of any Woodcock from the usual spot this morning but Snipe were heard with at least 3 Snipe seen from the Ramp a while later. Greylag Geese and Bewick's Swan could be heard calling from the back pool and 54 Greylags and 127 Mute Swans left this roost area but no sign of the Bewick's leaving but could still be heard, presumably the 2 adults and 1 juvenile. The first Green Sandpiper of the year was on the fresh mud from the Ramp with two birds present, a single Cetti's Warbler called, a Kingfisher was in the small reed clump and later from Feast hide and a ringtail Hen Harrier passed through towards Minster marshes. Five Marsh Harriers all left together and a male was seen later, Cormorants passed through in large groups with a total of 1120 counted. A Grey Heron, 6 Stock Doves, 2 drake Wigeon, 14 Meadow Pipits, 24 Gadwall and 2 Tufted Duck were seen. The Marsh hide was devoid of all bird life except a pair of Lapwing that looked to be standing over their territory. There was a single Water Pipit at Feast hide and 3 Water Pipits from the Ramp a Black-tailed Godwit , new for the year, had joined the 84 Lapwings from the Ramp where there was also 450+ Teal. The farm in Stodmarsh village held 3+ Yellowhammers and 10 Corn Buntings and a Buzzard was atop a bush upon leaving.
