February 4th

After missing last weekend due to Pacific and White-billed Divers it was good to be back in the Valley, albeit a rather quiet valley compared. A Tawny Owl was calling constantly upon arrival at 06:00, 36 Wigeon flew over towards Collard's, the first of 3 Water Rails started calling and 3 Cetti's Warblers were  singing. A Bittern flew over us on the Lampen Wall and the first of 3 ringtail Hen Harriers left roost, 4 Great-crested Grebes were on the lake but very few ducks, a few Mallards and a small number of Teal. There were 18 Mute Swans, 300 Greylag Geese, 100 Cormorants, 2 Kingfishers, 3 Great Black-backed Gulls and 3 Grey Herons. At the Grove end we encountered our first Greenfinch of the year, 14 Snipe were having a fly around, a female Pintail flew up valley, 3 Tufted Ducks were on Feast Pool and 720 Teal were from the Ramp Pool. A second Bittern afforded great flight views as it passed over the Harrison's area then over Feasts pool; before dropping into the reeds to the left of the Ramp.
Kingfisher at Feast hide.
