January 2nd

Our first day of the New Year was the 2nd as, weather reports and family commitments made the 1st a right-off. On this 'first' day of the year Sue Morton, Mark Chidwick, Dave Sutton, Bernie Weight and I gathered on the Lampen Wall just beyond Tower hide before the first bend, here we waited in the hope of Woodcock and just on 07:10 2 Woodcocks flew past us so close you could hear the wing beats with one, possibly, two more also seen. We then moved back along the Lampen Wall to the gap in the bushes to wait for Harriers. The first of 5 Hen Harriers arose from the reeds at 07:21 a ringtail followed by  2 ore ringtails and 2 males and, the first of 15 Marsh Harriers left the reeds at 07:2. On the lake were 133 Great Black-backed Gulls, 4 Great-crested Grebes, 12 Pochards, 1 Tufted Duck, 4 Gadwall, 31 Shoveler and 3 Wigeon plus Teal and Mallard. A Water Pipit was at Marsh hide, a Sparrowhawk over the lake, 3 Siskins with 60+ Goldfinch in the Alder Wood and a single Chiffchaff behind Undertrees were all added to the growing list. Tawny Owl, Stonechat, Grey Wagtail, Goldeneye, Ring-necked Parakeet, Buzzard, Kestrel, all the winter Thrushes and 4 Bullfinches all added to bring the days total to 68 species.
