December 26th

An early start at Grove Ferry and there was no sign of any Woodcock today but, a Long-eared Owl came overhead pursuing a small Bat species then veered off and appeared to drop in to the trees outside the Grove Ferry Inn! A Tawny Owl called in the distance and Snipe Lapwing, Greylag and Fieldfare called in the dark. Out of the back pools there were 83 Mute Swans, I couldn't see the ringtails from the Ramp but the male Hen Harrier appeared on cue at 0742 in the distance behind Tower hide. Three Little Egrets passed out to the north and 10 Marsh harriers were seen. A spectacular 92 Linnets were in the Ramp bushes and, although chattering were unseen until taking flight and leaving in groups of between 4 and 30. The 1100+ Cormorants came mostly over Grove although quite a few flew north and on Feast pool were 18 Gadwall, 2 Shoveler, 8 Mallards and an eclipse drake Wigeon while a male Stonechat put in an appearance.
