December 25th

A saunter around Stodmarsh in very windy weather this morning keeping all small birds out of sight except a few Robins. The wind did not stop the Harriers leaving roost though and from 0734 there were 11 Marsh Harriers out and 4 Hen Harriers including one male. A Little Egret passed over on its way to Chislet or somewhere further, 220 Lapwings came in from the Grove end and 450+ Fieldfares left the reed beds and surrounding trees. A Water Rail flew across a dyke behind Tower hide, 2 Grey Herons flew towards Reed Bed hide and 8 Mute Swans were present. On the lake were 6 Great-crested Grebes, 37 Shoveler, 3 Tufted Ducks, 4 Pochards, 6 Gadwall, 197 Mallards, 768 Teal and 2 Little Grebes. There were a further 14 Gadwall in the channel by the Boat House near the Alder Wood. The Cinnamon Teal was still present as well. On the roadside field out of the village where fresh manure has been laid there was a mixed flock of 40+ Yellowhammers and Corn Buntings.

Happy Christmas.
