March 4th


No sound of any Owls this morning but, Green Sandpipers were heard in the dark. As the light improved it revealed 4 Green Sandpipers on the edge of the mud before flying off towards Stodmarsh. There were 3 Shelducks, 3 Pochards, 180 Lapwing and 365 Teal. A couple of Cetti's Warblers were calling a single Black-tailed Godwit was with the Lapwings and 131 Mute Swans left roost. Only 2 Shovelers seen and 1 Little Egret plus 3 ringtail Hen Harriers including a stonking 1st winter male. The Kingfisher was back after a two week break, 5 Marsh Harriers including the 'red tagged' female were seen, a pair of Linnets are setting up territory on the Ramp and a Grey Heron was on the Ramp Pool. While watching the young male Hen Harrier a striking male Merlin was seen perched on top of a bush at the north end of Harrison's Drove and after a few minutes flew off towards the industrial estate. There were 4 Snipe, 19 Gadwall, 1 Little Grebe a pair of Tufted Ducks, 2 Bearded Tits and 3 Skylarks. A Water Pipit landed on the mud in front of the Ramp, a Pied Wagtail and 6 Yellowhammers were in Stodmarsh village and a Sparrowhawk flew along the Lampen stream near Collard's.
