January 22nd

A morning at Grove Ferry cut short by ever decreasing visibility from an increasing bank of fog blanketing the reserve. A Woodcock was seen going to roost by the Paddocks and 32 Linnets left their roost in the Ramp Bushes. Nothing on the frozen pond but 46 Lapwings did drop in, 2 Marsh harriers flew through, a Grey Heron dropped into the back pools and a Water Rail called. At the Stodmarsh end Mark Chidwick sighted 5 Tundra Bean Geese on the frozen lake (new for the year, 2 ringtail Hen Harriers out of roost and a calling Raven (also new) over the lake. Sue Dave and I came across 5 Grey Partridges in a frosted field near the Boat House (also NFY), 1 Little Owl as well as 1 Firecrest and 1 Coal Tit both new year ticks.
A couple of extra species added this month by Brendan Ryan include Lesser Black-backed Gull on the 5th and Shelduck and Golden Plover on the 20th.
